March 5th thru March 8th Desert Trails RV Park to Benson Escapees RV Park

March 5th thru March 8th Desert Trails RV Park to Benson Escapees RV Park

March 5th Today we drove about 50 miles from the west side of Tucson south to Benson. We were fortunate to get a spot here at the Escapees RV Park. This is a Co-Op type ownership RV Park, comprising of sites privately owned. There was a vacancy on one of the sites so we were able to rent it. We could only stay here as guests of an Escapee member; our friends are resident members so they sponsored us while we are here. Tonight at the club rooms we went to listen to live music and watch people dance. That line dancing looks like fun.

March 6th Today we drove about 20 miles to Kartchner Caverns State Park. This cave formation was discovered in 1974 and was open to tourism a few years back. This is a live, still growing, cave and we had to go through a couple of sealed chambers to get into the caves. Unfortunately we are not permitted to take photos in the caves so we have the memories and a few postcards. In the evening at the club house there was an ice cream evening, where we ate ice cream and sang happy birthday and happy anniversary to the people celebrating these occasions. Also got to chat with some of folks who are staying here.

March 7th We had a relaxing day at the campground. In the morning we joined up with a group of volunteers at the park who do park maintenance work on Mondays. We helped dig a trench and put in a TV cable. I wandered over to the club house which has a billiard room and had a few games with some people who knew what they were doing. We also spent some time reading and looking at maps, and thinking about our next move.

March 8th We went for a tourist drive today, headed to a place called Whitewater Draw, where we heard that the Sandhill Cranes fly en-mass to this area and they arrive at 11.00 am, and sure enough they were flying in from everywhere right on time, honking as they were coming, quite a sight. We also saw a couple of Big Horn Owls in a barn there.
Our next stop was at Bisbee, an old mining community. We stopped and looked at a massive open pit mine. We also walked thru town and enjoyed the historical buildings. Drove onto Tombstone, and visited the old west. We really enjoyed a self guided tour of the old Courthouse, and all the historical photos and stories in the building. In the main street of Tombstone there were several folks dressed as they could have been in the Gunfight at the OK corral, as there is a daily show of the gunfight. After a wonderful couple of hours at Tombstone we drove the 20 miles back to Benson.
