February 22nd Anchorage – Seattle – Tucson
We have finally made our trip back to the lower 48 to carry on with our traveling in our trusty Chevy Truck and our tent on wheels Cassie.
Our neighbor Dale with his 2 dogs Libby and Keisha picked us up at 4.30am to drive us to the airport for our flight south, thank you Dale. The flight to Seattle and Tucson was uneventful which is always nice. We arrived in Tuscon about 3.30 pm and our friends from Palmer Alaska, Lyle and Rose who now have a home in Green Valley met us at Tucson airport and drove us to where Chevy and Cassie have been parked in storage for the last 3 months. Chevy started up right way which is always a relief especially after being parked for awhile. We disposed of the moth balls and decon that we had placed strategically throughout our vehicles to ward off any and all unwanted visitors that may have wanted to make a new home in our truck or trailer.
We drove to Desert Trails RV Park which is about 20 miles out of Tucson. We had made reservations to stay here quite awhile ago, we could only get 1 night, campgrounds are full of snow birds at this time of the year. We had a lovely soak in the spa pool this evening a lovely way to finished off a long day of travel.
February 23nd –February 25th Green Valley
We had a very casual day, left the park and drove into Tucson and met our friend Luci who is also from Anchorage. We spent some time with her and then drove out to Green Valley about 40 miles south of Tucson. We parked in a vacant lot next to Lyle and Rose. While in Green Valley with Lyle and Rose we did the tourist type things in the area.
We visited the Titan Missile Museum Site and did a tour of the underground facilities, we went to the control room where the Titan 2 would have been launched from, fortunately for all of us that did not happen. We looked into the missile duct where the 103ft Titan 2 sits with its nuclear war head, surrounded by an 8 ft concrete wall. The construction of the site was amazing technology, let alone the technology that went into the Titan missile.
We visited the artist community of Tubac about 10 miles from Green Valley, spent ½ a day wondering around looking at crafts , a lot of metal work and ceramics there to view and buy.
