March 1st – March 4th Desert Trails RV Park- Tucson, AZ

March 1st – March 4th Desert Trails RV Park- Tucson, AZ
Another beautiful day today. We had a relaxing day around the campground. In the
afternoon we got our folding bikes out of the back seat of Chevy and went for a
nice bike ride in the desert around here. In the evening there was a 15 piece highschool band performing in the club house. When we got there the club house was
packed, so we enjoyed the music outside the hall for awhile.

March 2nd We drove up to Kitt Peak National Observatory, and fortunately today itwas open. We had a great tour of the facilities. There are 26 telescopes ranging
in size from 0.6 meters to 4 meters there looking at the skies. We got to look
thru a solar scope which is designed to view the solar flares emitted from the sunWe were lucky today as there were 3 flares, the guide said that the largest was
about 80,000 miles high; it looked like a speck beside the sun.
March 3th We made a full day of visiting the Pima Air and Space
Museum which is about 20 miles from our RV park. Once again we
got here for the 1st docent tour. There is a replica of the
Wright Brothers Plane that was flown at Kittyhawk. We got a full explanation of the design and specs of the plane. In the museum
there are hundreds of aircraft from the smallest aircraft to someof the largest planes built. There is also a SR71 Blackbird, a
spy plane which is the fastest aircraft ever built. There was a
hangar dedicated to WW2 aircraft. In the hangar was a B-29
Fortress, the 1st pressurized plane.
The highlight of the visit here for us was the 390th Memorial
Hangar inside was a B-17G Flying Fortress. Our docent was RetiredColonel Richard Bushong who had flown 28 missions over Europe in WW2, twice bombing Berlin. It was remarkable to hear about the
tremendous loss of life of the bomber aircraft crews from someonewho had witnessed it. Richard authored a book which I had to
purchase as he had flown bombing missions from WW2 to Vietnam.

March 4th Well we decided to say another day here at Desert Trails,a day of complete relaxation and catching up on things we have
neglected to do while we have been tourists. In the evening we
had soak in the spa pool which did every evening at this RV Park
